These are the most and cheapest type of camera, wherein a wire plugs directly from the camera to the monitor. The disadvantage is that wires, including extension cables and connectors, can be tough to lay.

Wireless Home CCTV systems
With these systems, images can be transmitted using analogue or digital technology. Digital cameras are typically higher quality but more costly. Wireless systems can face hindrance from devices such as cordless phones, routers and microwaves, and can be blocked by heavy masonry or metal objects. The filming might also get interrupted if the internet connection is lost.

Outdoor Home CCTV Cameras
Ensure that the CCTV cameras are weatherproof if at all you're using them outside. Remember an IP (International Protection) rating of 66 is recommended. Wireless cameras are available, however, you still have to run a cable to a power source. Also, position the cameras where you know that they can't be tampered with, but can be accessed for cleaning and maintenance. You can also buy vandal proof cameras, however, these generally tend to cost more.

IP CCTV System
These cameras make use of your network or internet portal to send images to the router of your computer, thus letting you access the footage over the internet from remote locations.

If you are thinking of installing a home CCTV system for your property, you need to abide by its privacy laws. This means that your camera aren't pointed at others house or at public space.
